Here Is A Small Sampling of the Things I Hate

Whenever I get a tad overwhelmed, I inevitably end up making a list of things that I can’t stand. Perhaps it’s because my patience is stretched thin, perhaps it’s because I’m doing it to distract myself from the things that actually require my attention, perhaps it’s because I’m really less Pollyanna and a lot more like that guy from “Black Books”. Point is that regardless of the rhyme or reason behind it, I’m going to make that list now.

1. Politics. The thing that made me shout at the radio this morning was the whole Republican drafted platform, a key element of which is opposing gay marriage. Oh, like we don’t have more to focus on right now than keeping people from marrying. And like all your “god-approved” marriages have really withstood the test of time, breeders. Short-sighted, narrow-minded, tempest-in-a-teacup assholery, if you ask me.

2. The lighting in this office. My office is two shades of bright - some orangey yellow and some sunnier yellow - and these lights just aren’t helping to make this room seem less like a disaster at the mustard factory. In fact, they’re enhancing it.

3. Paper. Screw you! You cut me, you pile up on my desk, and half of you pieces I didn’t even print or want or need! Get the hell out of here! Go back to being a tree or something!

The Practicalities of Being Vader

I had a dream last night in which I was escaping the impending apocalypse with a strange mix of people, including Darth Vader. We were in a space ship (that was suspiciously similar to a conversion van) and we were headed to an Ann Taylor Loft where we were going to hide out until the worst was over. (Please do not ask me why we weren’t going to a grocery store or a Target Greatland. There was a huge debate over that issue and I lost.) Anyway, once we got to the Ann Taylor Loft, I told Darth Vader he really needed to get the new black iPhone because, honestly, it’s like it was tailor made for him. We went back and forth on the pros and cons and after about 30 minutes he finally ended the discussion because he just didn’t want to change his service provider and get into a new, 2-year contract.

Dear Aziz,

We just want to say - THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH! You are a lazy, lazy, lazy motherfucker and lazy fucks like you are what make us the real dough! Hear me out.

We just did some math. Since joining in September of ‘05, you’ve spent $665.29 in membership fees. And to date, you’ve watched and received…. TEN MOVIES!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH! That’s $66.53/MOVIE!!! HAHAHAHAH!

We were a little worried when you first joined. You got 9 movies those first two months and watched them and returned them right away. “Twin Peaks,” “The Staircase,” Chinatown - you were ripping through them. It seemed like you were a diligent Netflix-er that would hurt our profits.

But THEN - you just stopped! You’ve only rented ONE FUCKING MOVIE SINCE THEN!!!

And instead of going online and cancelling your membership, you just kept paying us about $20 a month to keep a copy of A Streetcar Named Desire, Casablanca, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at your house FOR ALMOST THREE YEARS!

We can’t thank you enough for this Aziz and we hope you continue to pay us $20 a month for DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

I got the same letter, except it thanked me for keeping Gone With The Wind, Out of Africa, and Patton. Weird.

I’m nowhere near this close, but Downfall is just sitting there, mocking me, inside its little red envelope. And I’m surprised Netflix would curse, but, honestly, it just makes me like them a little bit more.
